Irregular Heart Rhythm

EKG Practice Strips and Quizzes

Definition of Irregular Heart Rhythm

An irregular heart rhythm can be a heart rate that is too slow or too fast or the rhythm may be irregular from beat to beat.

Learn to Diagnosis Irregular Heart Rhythm

Irregular heart rhythm can be evaluated using several different tests. In this section, we will discuss electrocardiograms (EKGs). This will include the following:

  • Heart Rhythm Basics
  • Irregular Heart Rhythm Drills
  • Graded Quiz

Heart Rhythm Basics

The lessons in this course will help you learn to determine heart rate from an EKG tracing and assessing cardiac rhythm. Discussion and examples will help you observe P-wave forms and measure EKG waveform intervals and segments. You can also practice what is taught in each lesson using that lesson's quiz.

Irregular Heart Rhythm Drills

Try our heart arrhythmia practice strips to gain confidence and speed in arrhythmia interpretation. After each answer, scoring and detailed coaching is provided. With 100+ EKG strips, this drill can be repeated many times.

Irregular Heart Rhythm Quiz

The irregular heart rhythm quiz consists twenty EKGs that require assessment. With each answer, feedback is given. A report with all twenty questions and correct answers is provided at the completion of the quiz.

Patient ECG Monitor Challenge

A moving EKG waveform in this quiz is used to introduce you to observing a patient monitor.

Types of Irregular Heart Rhythms

The origin and heart rate are used to help classify irregular cardiac rhythms.

  • Fast (over 100 beats per minute) heart rhythms are described by the term "tachycardia". Tachycardias can originate in the atria or ventricles.
    • Ventricular arrhythmias include:
      • Long QT syndrome
      • Premature ventricular contractions
      • Ventricular fibrillation
      Supraventricular (atrial) arrhythmias include:
      • Atrial fibrillation
      • Atrial flutter
      • Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome

  • Bradycardia describes slow heart rates (under 60 beats per minute).
    • Types of bradycardia include""
      • Conduction Block
      • Tachy-brady syndrome
      • Sick Sinus Syndrome

  • Premature Beat is an extra beat, occurring earlier than normal.
